The sentences

Oren, Tal and Alon Alexander were each sentenced to 30 years in federal prison after being found guilty at trial of conspiracy to traffic women and girls for sex. [1] Two of the three, Oren and Tal, were former superstar brokers at Douglas Elliman who later co-founded their own high-end real estate firm. [2]

U.S. District Judge Valerie E. Caproni imposed the sentences in a packed Manhattan courtroom. [1] She told the brothers their conduct was monstrous. [3]

Fifteen years against life

The brothers had asked for 15-year sentences, while prosecutors sought life. [1] Caproni called life draconian. [1]

She declined to impose life sentences, saying she did not believe the brothers were beyond redemption. [3]

The verdict and the evidence

The brothers were found guilty in March of 10 counts, including conspiracy to commit sex trafficking and sex trafficking by force. [3] Alon and Tal Alexander were convicted of sex trafficking of a minor. [1] Alon and Oren Alexander were convicted of aggravated sexual abuse by force or intoxicant and sexual abuse of a physically incapacitated person. [1]

Oren Alexander was also convicted of sexually exploiting a minor after prosecutors showed the jury a video he recorded of himself appearing to assault a drugged 17-year-old girl in 2009. [2]

Eleven women testified during the five-week trial. [2] They described being lured with invitations to parties and vacations, drugged and sexually assaulted. [2]

According to a superseding indictment, the brothers used the promise of luxury experiences, travel and accommodations to lure women to locations where they were raped or sexually assaulted. [2] In a court filing, prosecutors characterized the Alexanders as 'serial rapists'. [2]

What victims told the court

Olivia Lane said she was 'profoundly incapacitated' after a fraction of one drink while meeting Oren Alexander, and that she was raped at least a dozen times. [3]

Another woman described being raped by Tal Alexander in the Hamptons in August 2014. [4] She said every second felt like an eternity of terror. [4]

The defense and the judge's reply

Defense attorneys argued the sexual encounters were consensual and that the brothers were insensitive toward some women but not criminal. [2] Oren Alexander told the court that he and his brothers had never drugged or raped anyone. [4]

Caproni told the brothers that this denial was 'entirely a lie'. [4]

From the firm to the courtroom

Rape allegations against the brothers began emerging in 2024, and Tal and Oren Alexander stepped away from their firm Official Partners in June 2024. [5] The brothers were arrested in December 2024, along with Alon, who ran the family's private security company. [2]

They have been jailed without bail since those arrests. [4] They have also faced about two dozen civil lawsuits, including one from Tracy Tutor of Bravo's 'Million Dollar Listing Los Angeles'. [1]

Where they will serve the time

Caproni said she will ask the Bureau of Prisons to consult experts on whether the brothers should be held together, as she believes they are bad influences on one another. [3]

She agreed to recommend that the brothers be imprisoned near Miami, where they grew up and have relatives, while saying she would otherwise send them to different lockups. [4]

What this means for real estate readers

If you work in luxury real estate, the case involves two brokers from your field. [2] Oren and Tal Alexander left Official Partners in June 2024, the year the allegations began emerging. [5]

The sentences close the criminal trial, and the brothers still face about two dozen civil lawsuits. [1]
